The perineum is a small set of unrecognized muscles that are strained during pregnancy. But 40% of women do not have perineum rehabilitation after giving birth to their child for multiple reasons. Zoom on this central area that should not be overlooked.

What is the perineum?

The perineum is a muscle that is located on the wall of the pelvis in both men and women, although their structure is different. Its role is to support the lower digestive tract, urinary tract and genital tract . This ensures urinary and fecal continence. Indeed, the organs located in the abdomen cause pressure variations when they contract, empty or fill. The perineum then exerts a role of pressure and resistance exerted upwards in order to maintain a permanent balance.

The perineum is subjected to strong pressures related to the weight of the viscera but also to the weight of the uterus and the baby in pregnant women. It is normally programmed to withstand and counter abdominal pressure. Muscles are sometimes weakened and reflexes are impaired in cases of pregnancy, overweight, smoking, constipation or by drinking too much water. So after childbirth, for example, pressure exercises are recommended to tone the perineum so that it regains all its strength.

Why re-educate the perineum?

Perineum rehabilitation sessions help restore muscle tone . The exercises performed consist of performing the contractions of the muscles surrounding the vagina and especially the levator ani muscles. Note that women who have given birth by caesarean section are not exempt from perineum rehabilitation . The whole point of this rehabilitation results from the many harmful consequences that can follow childbirth such as urinary leakage, sensations during sexual intercourse for example …

How to re-educate the perineum?

The manual re-education is a voluntary contraction repeated. There is also electrostimulation which consists of the electrical stimulation of the muscles of the perineum via a vaginal probe.

To strengthen the perineum, weakened after childbirth, alternative methods exist. This is non-invasive rehabilitation based on energetics or breathing. It can be the practice of yoga that muscles the perineum and abdominals.

The solution of acupuncture can also be considered to relieve perineal pain. The purpose of the injections is to rebalance the flow of vital energy which circulates in the meridians of the body. This can be done by helping the blood to move for example.

It is advisable to start rehabilitation of the perineum 6 to 8 weeks after childbirth. The gynecologist may prescribe sessions after the post-natal visit. Note that 10 sessions are 100% reimbursed by Social Security. Do not hesitate to consult or discuss this rehabilitation with your doctor to avoid developing health concerns following childbirth… Do not be ashamed either, we are all concerned!
